Often the shape and color of an old-fashioned penny loaf when young, the Cep—also known as the Porcini or the Penny Bun—is one of the best-known edible fungi. Since it is an ectomycorrhizal species, fruitbodies cannot be cultivated, but are widely collected on a commercial scale. Though apparently widespread (as well as being introduced with exotic trees in South Africa and New Zealand), the Cep is part of a complex of closely related species and its true distribution is uncertain. Bizarrely, the Cep contains amatoxins (the same compound found in the Death Cap, Amanita phalloides), but in such low quantities as to cause no reported ill effects.
